New Report:
Al Qaeda and Pakistan: Current Role and Future Considerations

This ISPU Special Report (October 2010) examines Al Qaeda's emerging strategy in Pakistan, its regional and global impact, and lays out policy guidelines for the United States and international partners. The author conducted extensive field research in Pakistan, where he engaged with numerous U.S. and Pakistani military, intelligence and civilian analysts and practitioners.

"Haider Mullick is one of the brightest and most balanced analysts of Pakistan around."

  - David Ignatius Columnist, Associate Editor, Washington Post

"Haider Ali Hussein Mullick, an authority on Pakistani militancy, says Lashkar-e-Taiba...has become a prominent Pakistani torchbearer of al-Qaeda’s world view... al-Qaeda successfully directs without directly leading,” Mr Mullick wrote in a report on al-Qaeda in Pakistan. “It has survived and thrived due to a highly profitable ‘train the trainer programme’, which extends franchises to worthy applicants and partners.”
- Matthew Green - The Financial Times (Nov 2, 2010)

U.S.-Pakistan: Finding a Mutual Way to Security Heritage Foundation, Oct 27, 2010

"Al Qa'eda and Pakistan is a detailed, sober and well researched study of how Al Qa'eda is growing and changing in its most important location.  This paper needs to be read by both Congress and the executive branch.  Its conclusions demand action or the United States will pay seriously for its inattention."
   - Ronald E. Neumann,
U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan
(2005-2007)

"Haider Mullick's latest report is cutting-edge frontline stuff. Anyone looking to reboot their Al Qaeda knowledge base should have a look. It is the kind of work policy-makers should take notice of."
   - Sherry Rehman, Member of Pakistan's Parliamentary Committee on National Security, President, Jinnah Institute

"Al Qa'eda's  influence over a growing number of home grown extremist groups in Pakistan is an extremely dangerous development for the security of Pakistan's democracy.  Haider Ali Hussein Mullick's work is an important look at a subject that is little understood and highly consequential to Pakistan's stability and international counter terrorism policies."
   - Wendy Chamberlin, President, Middle East Institute, U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan (2001-2002)

"This is a great piece as it touches on not only some of the specific theatre issues, but identifies a number of wider concerns - strategic communications and the 'Battle of the Narrative' for example.  The Challenge for the community will be how to address these emerging and newly established battle lines."
-Sir Graeme Lamb, (LtGen Retd) Former Special Advisor to ISAF Commander, (2009-2010)
